Guest lecture by CEO, ITC Ltd. on FMCG sector

On 11th of November 2012, we had the gracious presence of Mr. Sanjiv Puri, CEO, India Tobacco Division, ITC Ltd and it was a great learning experience for all of us to hear him on the latest trends and innovations in the FMCG sector. Mr. Sanjiv Puri joined ITC in 1986. Till 2000, he handled a wide range of responsibilities in eCommerce, Operations and Manufacturing in the Tobacco Division. He also led ITC Infotech Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of ITC, as Managing Director from May 2006 to August 2009. He was also the Managing Director of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary company of ITC in Nepal. He was responsible for diversifying the operations of the company into branded apparels, making Surya Nepal one of the largest private sector companies in Nepal.

Mr. Puri threw some light on the latest developments in ITC focused on triple bottom-line principle of ITC which aims at economical, ecological and environmental development of the company. ITC has contributed to the agricultural sector with its innovation called ITC e-Chaupal which is also a channel for strategic sourcing. e-Chaupal is a part of Agri Business. He also highlighted the remarkable case study of Aashirvaad atta. Aashirvaad became a market leader in branded packaged atta in India with its strategic sourcing through e-Chaupal. Also many marginalized farmers have benefited from the pulp plantation on their wasteland with the help of hybrid plants developed in ITC’s R&D department. With its control at very lower level of supply chain, it has successfully launched new products like biscuits, noodles, confectionary etc. Thus ITC contributes to society and business simultaneously with its unique initiatives. And with the synergy of all its businesses it is achieving success. Overall it was an excellent great learning experience for all of us. Looking forward for more such enlightening opportunities in future!

5 Lessons from MBA IIT Kanpur

1.      Learning is not confined only to classrooms As the first semester is over, I realize that apart from classroom subject matter, there are a lot more things that I have learnt here. Learning takes place in almost every aspect of one's life at MBA IIT K. The induction activities that our seniors conducted before the official start of the semester was a great way to interact with the batch-mates. The group projects and the assignments that followed after the semester began, taught us the art of working productively in teams, time management, importance of feedback and learning while mingling with the people from diverse backgrounds. Every week, we had eminent speakers from various top positions in the corporate world, sharing topics that they were passionate about which helped us to constantly expand our knowledge base into new areas. 2.        Be prepared to leave behind your comfort   zone In the class yo...

MBA @ IIT Kanpur: More than just an MBA

The season of summer internship has already started for MBA batch of 2013. All have already joined their respective summer-organizations and seem to be enjoying the work and the change. For some it’s a break from campus life and much awaited break from study. College graduates who don’t take a “working” break and join MBA program find an opportunity to earn their first salary-a beautiful experience which I need not explain for obvious reason. While the excitement among fresh college graduates about summer internship is understandable, experienced students cannot be left in exception either. They are found equally excited. Perhaps the break from study is the main reason. The formal attires, which feel ignored for a long time, find a chance to breathe in free air; otherwise the formal attires, at least at IITK, become like a bride’s Shadi ka joda which makes special and rare appearance only. However, when it comes to IIT Kanpur you find an exception. The excitement about summer int...
