A Day at a Consulting Firm

Consulting- most sought after career by MBA graduates for most of the b schools across the country. After all who wouldn’t want a career that challenges one's intellectual, analytical ability and in turn opens the door of millions of opportunities one aspires for? It's not only financially rewarding but also has a high level of job satisfaction. Sounds interesting, isn't it?

However, most of us being new to MBA are least knowledgeable about consulting as a career and consulting industry. So, to discuss consulting as a career, and to understand the core consulting concept and future roadmap of consulting industry, PR & Media cell recently organized an interaction with Mr. Gopesh Mittal, a consultant with McKinsey & Co. USA. He is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and presently pursuing his Masters from Harvard Business School, USA.

Mr Gopesh started with an initial interactive session with the audiences on topic "A Typical Day for a Consultant". He elaborated on various activities including extensive client interactions, brainstorming sessions, project analysis and thorough research required to be performed as a consultant. Then he discussed the skill set required to step into the consulting domain followed by the success mantra for a successful stint as a consultant. He emphasized on three key points for succeeding at top notch consulting firms like McKinsey & Co., which are
  • Looking for long-term relationships
  • Providing clarity of communication
  • Proactive in grasping

He described the pyramid structure which most of the consulting organizations maintain and gave a factual statement "In consulting either you move up or you move out". Talking about various types consulting profiles, he laid out the career path and the hierarchy in the organization that goes with a consultant i.e. partner level and associate level. Finally he talked about the mobility. According to Mr. Gopesh a consultant needs to have great interpersonal skills, and should know how to deal and interact with the clients, gather the requirements and accomplish the task without formal authority.

Mr. Gopesh finally concluded the session with open questions from the audiences. This was really an awesome experience for IITK MBA junta as this was highly information-rich session and provided us unique opportunity to experience consulting industry.
