A Day at a Consulting Firm

Consulting- most sought after career by MBA graduates for most of the b schools across the country. After all who wouldn’t want a career that challenges one's intellectual, analytical ability and in turn opens the door of millions of opportunities one aspires for? It's not only financially rewarding but also has a high level of job satisfaction. Sounds interesting, isn't it? However, most of us being new to MBA are least knowledgeable about consulting as a career and consulting industry. So, to discuss consulting as a career, and to understand the core consulting concept and future roadmap of consulting industry, PR & Media cell recently organized an interaction with Mr. Gopesh Mittal, a consultant with McKinsey & Co. USA. He is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and presently pursuing his Masters from Harvard Business School, USA. Mr Gopesh started with an initial interactive session with the audiences on topic "A Typical Day for a Consultant". He elaborated on...

THE HIGH OCTANE RIDE: FRESHERS NIGHT ‘12

“Dance like nobody's watching, Love like you've never been hurt, Sing like nobody's listening, Live like it's heaven on earth”  -Mark Twain An apt quote to describe the sumptuous freshers' party for the MBA batch of 2012-14, organised by the seniors on 17 th August, 2012. As with all freshers' parties, the gist of this night was to make every Y’14 MBA student feel like being an integral part of the IIT-K family, younger and ever new to take the challenge of the years ahead, ever fresh through the year and carrying the legacy ahead. The proceedings started as early as 7pm, as all the students geared up for an evening of fun, enjoyment and relaxation. After ambiguity, predicament and lots of discussions over what to wear for the occasion, almost everyone reached the venue for the night, old SAC ground, by 7.15pm where the party finally began at around 7.45pm. The event, compered by Sagar and Kanwardeep, kicked off with the Y’14 students being called on ...

Break ke baad...

The summer internship break seems to have brought a conspicuous hiatus to the blog... In life, at many occasions you feel “the circle” to be completing. In last few months a number of circles were seen to be completing right from the moment of joining the summer organizations. Summer internship, more or less, appeared as if we were serving the notice period to leave the organization for IIT Kanpur .The first lap of the circle... The second lap of the circle could be seen while our interaction with a batch of new faces, of course with changed role. Batch 2014 was introduced to all the committees and activities that have become an integral part of MBA at IIT Kanpur. Many laps are yet to be seen in the form of birthday celebrations which have already started. Batch 2013 acted as a perfect bridge, and continues to do so, to pass down the prestigious legacy set by our distinguished alumni. The blog will see a change in terms of articles by new writers. Hope the change keeps us all...

MBA @ IIT Kanpur: More than just an MBA

The season of summer internship has already started for MBA batch of 2013. All have already joined their respective summer-organizations and seem to be enjoying the work and the change. For some it’s a break from campus life and much awaited break from study. College graduates who don’t take a “working” break and join MBA program find an opportunity to earn their first salary-a beautiful experience which I need not explain for obvious reason. While the excitement among fresh college graduates about summer internship is understandable, experienced students cannot be left in exception either. They are found equally excited. Perhaps the break from study is the main reason. The formal attires, which feel ignored for a long time, find a chance to breathe in free air; otherwise the formal attires, at least at IITK, become like a bride’s Shadi ka joda which makes special and rare appearance only. However, when it comes to IIT Kanpur you find an exception. The excitement about summer int...

The Asocial Networking: A book by an alumnus of 2011 batch

Very rarely does it happen that you see the things happening around and observe them. Even rare is the act of putting them down on a paper so accurately. This is not my cup of tea at least. I have, however, witnessed a similar micro-scanning work by Dhiraj Kumar-an IIT Kanpur alumnus and my long time friend: The Asocial networking. Well, I seriously don’t know how to write about the book. Which to be mentioned first and which one after that... any page you pick has its separate riveting existence. That is the striking beauty of the book. Being an individual, you may beg to differ from Dhiraj sometimes, but most of the time the innocent questions and thought provoking views will force you to wear a lovely smile for sure. The world has been changing and so has been the ways we communicate and network (do you think this word results from the same change in this context?) ourselves. The advent of social networking sites gives another platform to network. In this virtual world people ha...

Seminar: Vodafone COO on telecom sector at IME department, IIT Kanpur

It was a clear sunny afternoon of February and the students of IME department, IIT Kanpur were eager and enthusiastic to meet Mr. Ravi Santhanam who is current COO of Vodafone, UP East circle. An IIM-C graduate, he has previously held several key positions at Reliance Communications. Mr. Santhanam talked about the present scenario of telecommunication industry. While presenting a macro level environment analysis of industry he talked about key micro level issues the industry is facing. He said, although telecommunication sector has seen phenomenal growth in recent decade and seems to be very lucrative, its growth is dependent of various infrastructural and regulatory issues. The sector is unique in terms of licensing, lobbying, high capital intensive, continuous investment due to technology change, rent-seeking behavior and fight for finite communicable spectrum. The fight for customers and “online-ization” of services like banking, ticketing etc keep the industry on its toe for cont...
