5 Lessons from MBA IIT Kanpur

1.      Learning is not confined only to classrooms As the first semester is over, I realize that apart from classroom subject matter, there are a lot more things that I have learnt here. Learning takes place in almost every aspect of one's life at MBA IIT K. The induction activities that our seniors conducted before the official start of the semester was a great way to interact with the batch-mates. The group projects and the assignments that followed after the semester began, taught us the art of working productively in teams, time management, importance of feedback and learning while mingling with the people from diverse backgrounds. Every week, we had eminent speakers from various top positions in the corporate world, sharing topics that they were passionate about which helped us to constantly expand our knowledge base into new areas. 2.        Be prepared to leave behind your comfort   zone In the class yo...

The Dawn of A New Beginning - MBA Batch 2017-19

“Opportunities multiply as they are seized.” -Sun Tzu ‘I am an IITian’, even after two months here at IIT Kanpur this one line still fills our heart with excitement. Each one among the 54 students here who have started the journey into the MBA programme of IIT Kanpur, batch of 2017-19, feels that pride and with that equally realizes the responsibility it carries. We started our journey here on 20 th July. Meeting our batch mates for the first time still feels thrilling. Though we knew each other through the whatsapp/facebook group that was created by our seniors to make our registration process as smooth as possible. We were given several assignments before the registration to give us an inkling of the idea of how life at IIT Kanpur is going to be. Assignments were planned in a way such that we get a hands-on experience on case studies, presentations, group activities and article reading. We began burning the midnight oil as a precursor to actually doing it, and how...

"Is India Staring at a Demographic Disaster?"- An article by Himanshu Dubey (Student 2016-18 Batch)

All about the good part first, we all are hearing good news about India being the bright spot in the world, F.D.I. inflows are at their peak levels, stock market breaking all previous records, major reforms getting passed, less corruption levels at the highest level of the government, though the root level corruption is still plaguing this nation. You feel things are going in the right direction until you are greeted with the recent job numbers. To set the context right let’s look at some numbers: 12.56 lacs jobs were created in 2009 and a meager 1.35 lacs and 2.31 lacs in 2015 and 2016 respectively. We used to call the period corresponding to the 2009 numbers as jobless growth. What will you call this? Super jobless growth? Or Hyper jobless growth? Well I will leave it to you to come up with fancy terminologies. Dearth of Investments So, what’s the reason for all this misfortune which has come our way even when we are the brightest spot and so much F.D.I. inflows are happenin...

Student Experience, Bhavna Uttamchandani, MBA 2015-17 Batch

My rendezvous with Life - MBA Diary Most of us have read the timeless poem “ I have a rendezvous with death ”  - by Alan Seeger; “It may be he shall take my hand   And lead me into his dark land   And close my eyes and quench my breath—   It may be I shall pass him still. I have a rendezvous with Death” The beginning of the unforgettable MBA journey of my life had me with the feelings as depicted beautifully in the above stanza. Venturing into an unexplored journey with unknown fellows had taken my breathe but what attracted me more was the promise to explore and challenge my own limits. I was more than ready to quit my job and start this journey and finally it all started in 2015… From business formal photo-shoots to restless nights to complete the tasks given by the seniors welcomed us to the IIT journey. Neck to neck deadline tasks, the gatherings, the discussions all of these activities introduced me with people from length an...

Student Experience, Utkarsh Maurya MBA 2015-17 Batch

The word MBA resonates most often with academics and projects. But for me the two years into MBA were also endowed with activities, competitions, new learning, memories and a lifetime experience. Even before we took a plunge into academics of the first semester, the committee formation process awaited us. I was selected as a member of the junior committee for IIT Kanpur MBA magazine-Avant Garde. Just 2 months into studies, I was selected in the IIT Kanpur Air Rifle Shooting team. This was my first tryst with shooting and it indeed turned out to be a beautiful one. I won 3 medals at district level- 2 bronze medals in men individual category and 1 silver medal in men team category over the 2 years of my MBA life. I was also the runner-up in the inter-hostel Sports Competition in this sport. Juggling between sports and academics was not an easy task. The rigorous lectures, case studies and the project deadlines are just the academic part of your routine life. Then there ar...

"People: Plug and Play?" - An article by Saikat Chatterjee (Student 2015-17 Batch)

We often talk about Motivation, Engagement, Stress and Conflict Management. These are trending issues in HR today and if we look closely most of them have a negative origin. People are frustrated at work, switching jobs, actively disengaged, not motivated, not satisfied, highly stressed and the list continues. But why? Is it a new trend in the global workforce or is it something else? Is it really an individual issue or it has its root somewhere else? Why we don't look at the human inventory management practices at organizational, social and national level and critically analyze if the problem is with the parts or its usage? People are more flexible to fit in situations compared to assembly hardware but how far? Can our education system and training workshops really convert iron ores to pure gold? It is time to think about it. We talk about stepping outside of comfort zone and taking up new challenges. But we often ignore the fact that the motivation to take up new challen...

The Dawn of A New Beginning - MBA Batch 2016-18

Enthusiasm, zeal, hopes, ambitions resonate high in the spirits of the new batch of IME department, IIT Kanpur, which is en route a new journey. A new journey brings along with it a set of new experiences. And the journey at IIT Kanpur has been no different. From setting up our tiny rooms (which ultimately turn into a hotchpotch clutter), to detouring the huge campus (IIT Kanpur is spread in 1050 acres of land), owning the most prized vehicle on campus – a cycle, and the sight of National bird of IIT Kanpur- peacock, the initial days were a vacation. However the fun was yet to start. And how does this fun kick start- the fun activities and assignments (believe me how much you tend to hate them; they are indeed fun to do). It was an amazing experience with the ad making assignment- gathering at CCD for the subsided Devil’s Own on pretext of brainstorming creative ideas, the retakes and bloopers and then the final product-the ad. All the fun activities are scheduled at 11. Don’t ...

GIP mall it is. You reach the place well in advance so as not to leave a bad impression on the very first day of your internship. Well, life as they say has some different plans for you. You keep waiting for an hour for your colleague and of course your boss or your manager I should say. Aditya, my colleague; is pursuing his MBA from DOMS, IIT Roorkee. Oh, before that I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Ketan Bagga, an MBA student at IIT Kanpur (Yes IITs do have specialized MBA Programs), having a prior experience of around a year in IT industry, obviously as a software engineer. My First Week Experience of IIT Kanpur MBA: Varun Sharma

“ Desire is the key to motivation, but it is the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal — a commitment to excellence — that will enable you to attain the success you seek .”   – Mario Andretti I had a desire to be a part of one of the nation’s top institutes. I failed in my first attempt when it was for getting admission into   B. Tech.   even   though it wasn’t a serious one. But as they say “better late than never”, by God’s grace and my hard work, eventually I got the chance to fulfill my desire at the dream destination called IIT Kanpur. My IIT Kanpur MBA experience To begin with, I had different feelings right from the time this story started to unfold. First it was disbelief on becoming a part of the brand called IIT, followed by the euphoria of success & then there were a lot of apprehensions about my campus life at IIT Kanpur MBA. Needless to mention, I never had any sort of doubt about the intellect of ...
